Sparano Time

Sparano

Our apologies for our delay in posting a story on this weeks big news --we got a little carried away with our celebration I guess. And yes we were popping bottles shortly after midnight Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Yes the news was expected, but this was the bittersweet fruit from the painful 2011 season. The Jets offense had several major problems last year --a leaky offensive line, turnover-prone check-down QB, lack of explosive RB, but these are common weaknesses that could be managed with smart, effective ball-control, play-action play calls. Instead we saw our skittish QB consistently finding ways to take sacks or create turnovers out of the shotgun.  At no point did Schotty try to make the best tasting lemonade he could with the average lemons provided. He insisted on making iced tea. I could spend all day criticizing Schotty for all his faults, but no need to continue kicking a man while he is down. Who knows, maybe we get lucky and he gets hired by another NFL team. There would even be movement in my pants if he lands another coordinator gig in the AFC. Full blown erection if its in the division. For today there is no need to get greedy and I will just take his absence as addition by subtraction.

SPARANO TIME: Now the focus turns to new OC and former Dolphins HC Tony Sparano. We couldn't be happier with this move. We always admired the former Dolphins coach from afar for getting the most out of the limited talent he had. Most impressive was his division crown in 2008 which he clinched at the old dump in week 17. Despite an 0-7 start to the 2011 season his team never quit, showing a leadership quality this Jets offense desperately needs. He comes from the Parcells tree which is a perfect fit for Rex Ryan --very similar philosophy-- match a kick-ass defense with a ball-controlling smash mouth offense and solid special teams. Its a recipe that has led to multiple Super Bowls and travels in all weather. Don't be fooled by his conservative approach, much like former Jets play-caller Charlie Weiss he will lull you to sleep with the power running game, but put points on the board with aggressive play-action passes. There are also rumors circulating that former Chief HC Todd Haley might be joining Sparano as passing-game coordinator an assistant head coach. This could be a package deal as this duo shared offensive responsibilities under Parcells for the Cowboys in 2006. Haley won't tolerate Holmes bullshit and might be brought aboard to be the bad cop to Rex's good cop approach.

MANNING UPDATE: If Manning is let go by the Colts and is healthy the Jets should sniff around to see if he has any interest. Who wouldn't? He is the greatest QB on the planet when healthy. Better than Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. He is that good. But again who knows how healthy his neck is? I am not a doctor, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn last night so I am not going to try and speculate. And don't take my, or any anonymous Jets, or Rex's interest in Manning the wrong way. It doesn't mean we don't think Sanchez can get the job done. It is just being honest and admitting that he has a long way to go to get there, Don't worry Drew Brees, Eli Manning and many other great QB's struggled early in their career. Plus if Manning is an UFA and wants to play for the Jets on the cheap they would be stupid not to hand the keys to a future hall-of-famer. We will have more on this next week.

GARBAGE JOURNALISM: A lot of hot air has been wasted as a result of the Daily News latest hit-and-run tabloid creation. The big story was that a few unnamed players criticized Sanchez for being lazy, lack of leadership skills, and being babied. A few players discussed bringing in Manning. Maybe I am missing something, but what is the story? Is it any surprise that there is private dissension in an underachieving organization made up of over-paid, pampered athletes?  Is it any surprise that a few players would privately prefer a healthy HOF QB to a shaky, 3rd year, turnover pone QB? If you think those are stories I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you. Don't worry I will give you a great deal. This was garbage journalism from a no-talent ass clown tabloid writer. Next time you see Manish Mehta you can tell him I said that. Real men stand behind their words.
