In this week’s edition of the Green & White Show with Joseph Haas & Jinx Grand, your hosts wrap the conversation about preseason game one versus the Lions, and preview the matchup with the Jaguars. The New York Jets initially listed Geno Smith as the starter prior to that ankle injury suffered against the Lions, but he didn’t even dress versus the Jags this Saturday! He practiced all week on that gimpy ankle… limping around, but was held out of the game by the doctors and the coaching staff. Do you think the team mismanaged this injury? We jump all over that topic! Will practicing on that ankle now cost Geno Smith snaps later? It’s already cost him a chance to show his skills at home versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Starter-by-default (again) Mark Sanchez takes advantage of the chance to start, and plays well into the third quarter. That first drive was brilliantly run, ending in a TD catch by Jeff Cumberland. Cumberland has come a long way from the primary blocking TE, to a pass-catching weapon and end zone target for Mark Sanchez. One positive, Sanchez grounding the ball in the red zone when the play broke down… one negative, throwing the interception in the end zone on the same set of downs! Did Sanchez show the coaching staff enough to be named the starter versus Tampa Bay WEEK 1? Did he show you enough?
A positive for the Jets running game, Bilal Powell, and his ability to move the football down the field. He ran well in space, moved the pile at the line of scrimmage, and showed me he can play as a lead-back in the NFL. I’m just not sure he can do it for 16 games. Chris Ivory gets a few snaps, and Khalil Bell stands out with two TDs… and some tough inside running. Another positive, Clyde Gates returning kicks effectively! With Joe McKnight suffering from a head injury and unable to perform, we discuss his place on the roster later in the show.
A negative for the Jets defense, LB/DE Quinton Coples suffers a hairline fracture of the ankle and will miss 3-4 weeks, reportedly. He looked great in his new position, making an outstanding play on the QB in the pocket, and nearly causing a fumble. Now he’s on the shelf until WEEK 3! Sheldon Richardson finished the game with six tackles and a play in the backfield. Mo Wilkerson made a pro-bowler type play in the backfield as well, driving a blocker backwards and making a solid tackle.
In What Jets Said, Jets HC Rex Ryan calls Geno Smith’s last practice at Cortland “brutal” and we discuss the mind behind the madness. Why would a coach who always praises his players, suddenly give such a harsh assessment of his rookie signal-caller? Was this a calculated move by Rex, or was he just being bluntly honest and completely unfiltered. We debate whether Rex’s comments will benefit Geno Smith, build his character and possibly provide that tough love a Mark Sanchez didn’t receive as a young QB. We discuss the why!
In Rumors, Roster & The Rest, we wonder aloud if Joe McKnight will make the roster? If not for an MIA Mike Goodsen, and with Clyde Gates effective at running back kicks, Joe McKnight’s time as a member of the Jets may be coming to an end. Tommy Bohanon (out of Wake Forest), Khalil Bell, and the leader in the clubhouse, Bilal Powell, played well enough for me to move on from McKnight. McKnight has talent and value, but he’s on the sidelines more than on the field.
Hacking the NYJ for us is our player-expert Nolan Hack (@NolanHack). This week, we discuss the defensive line. We discuss Kendrick Ellis’s value to the team, and Mo Wilkerson’s eventual pro-bowl selection. Nolan gives his take on Sheldon Richardson, and his ability to make plays on the line. NT Damon Harrison gets a mention, now it’s time we get him that first regular-season tackle! Will this defensive line stop the run? A question so nice… we ask it twice! Can this defensive line STOP THE RUN! We tackle all and more… in this week’s edition of Hackin’ the NYJ.
I play backup QB for Lauren Beasley (@LBeasley313) in this week’s edition of The Rest Report, where we update you on the other teams in the AFC East. The world stood still for a few hours as Tom Brady appeared to injure his surgically-repaired knee. He participated in the next practice with a brace, and led the New England Patriots Saturday night against the Texans. We discuss whether the two teams that play in the Hall of Fame game gain an advantage from the extra preseason contest. We talk about players being one play away, EJ Manuel exemplifies that fact! He goes from sure-thing as the next starter in Buffalo… to out for the rest of the preseason after having a surgical procedure to drain fluid from his knee! We tackle all in this week’s edition of The Rest Report, as I take the snaps for our friend Lauren Beasley.
