Some quick thoughts as we stare at our stocking stuffed with coal. As our friend Joe Beningo would say -- Oh, the pain!
ANOTHER SCHOTTEY CLASSIC: There is a reason my hands look awfully similar to those of Jets OC and his father Marty --none of us have any rings on our fingers. Another disgraceful performance. If he hasn't left on a plane from Newark airport yet, I sure as hell hope its because his flight got delayed a few minutes. Seeing him on the sidelines next week will only cause me to vomit in my mouth for three straight hours. Don't worry that vomit thing has been an unwanted habit we picked up these last two seasons. Remember our column a few weeks back 'Hello, My Name is????", in which we warned about his play calling in a big 4th and short situation. Trailing by 13 today and facing a must have 4th and 2 inside the Giants 20 do you think the Jets would ground and pound their way to a first? Nope Sanchez from the shotgun where he surprisingly didn't have the ball batted down at the line of scrimmage and completed a pass over the middle to Kerley. Don't worry Mark would rewards Schottey's faith in him by fumbling away the ball on 3rd and goal from inside the Giants 2. Sanchez was awful, but lets not forget about Schottey. After a miraculous interception gave the Jets another life inside the Giants 11 coupled with a penalty in the Giants secondary to set up a 1st and goal score from Sanchez, the offense would get an opportunity to win the game when they got the ball back at midfield with just less than 6 minutes to play. Since the Jets had established a good ground presence it would make sense for the Jets to try to ride Shonn Greene, milk some clock and punch in a late score before handing the game off for the defense to finish. Makes sense since you are a ground and pound team. Right? Wrong. With their season on the line and only 50 yards from the end zone the Jets opened up in the shotgun. Incomplete screen pass. Shotgun again for another Sanchez ball batted down at the line of scrimmage. 3rd down was another shotgun formation that ended with a Sanchez sack for a four yard loss. The Jets would go 3 and out in the shotgun and punt their season away. The Jets would get the ball back at their 4 with just over 2 minutes to go and a pair of timeouts, but it was fait accompli. Just moments before the Jets defense would get another 3rd down stop to force the game winning opportunity, we predicted a Weatherford punt downed at the 1 followed by Sanchez, taking a safety to seal the Giants win. We got the safety right, but was 3 yards off on Weatherford's punt. Just a disgrace. If the silver lining of this season is the termination of Brian Schottenheimer maybe I will be able to crack a smile by the time the Mets are 6 games out around Memorial Day. Oh, the pain!
PLAYOFF UPDATE: We will be posting updates throughout the night on the Jets playoff scenarios, but here is a quick rundown. Essentialy the Jets need to win, have the Bengals lose, the Titans lose, and eitehr the Brincos/or Raiders lose. Their is a scenario where the Jets could make the playoffs if they win and only the Bengals and Broncos/or Raiders lose, but not the Titans involving strength of victory, but accoriding to our math the Jets trail and would need a minor miracle to catch the Titans. We will explain later but if anyone asks stick with a Jets win, Bengals loss, Titans loss and either Broncos or Raiders loss.
